Lingual app (a UX Writing Academy exercise)

Overview

Lingual is a leading mobile app for language learning similar to Duolingo, Babbel, and Mondly.

Implementation

Here’s what I did as part of this assignment:

Write microcopy for 5 different scenarios.

Decide how to deliver the message using either: toast/snack bar, standard pop-up, or as part of the flow of screens.

To write all copy according to the guidelines in Lingual’s content style guide.

Scenarios

1️⃣ In Lingual, users earn badges that they display on their user profiles. The user earned the Word Wizard badge for adding their first 500 words to their word bank. This is shown after the user completes a lesson.

Format: Toast

Copy: Word Wizard Badge 🔰Your first 500 words were added to your word bank!

2️⃣ The user tries to exit in the middle of a learning session. All session data will be lost if they exit.

Format: Pop up

Copy:

[H1] Exit lesson?

[Body] You’ll lose all data from this session.

[CTA 1] Yes, exit

[CTA 2] No, continue with lesson

3️⃣ The user chose to unfollow a fellow learner

Format: Toast

Copy: Woosh! 🧙🏻‍♀️ You unfollowed Wizardofwords34

4️⃣ The next lesson can’t load because the user lost their internet connection

Format: Part of the screen

Copy:

[H1] You lost internet connection.

[Body] Check your connection settings and try again

[CTA] Reload lesson

5️⃣ Users have daily word bank goals based on their daily target of new words. For example, a user can set their goal of adding 10 new words per day to their word bank. During a lesson, a user has just met their daily word bank goal and has earned a reward: 10 Ling-gems, for use at the Ling-shop.

Format: Pop up

Timing: As soon as the user completes the lesson

Copy:

[H1] Abracadabra! ✨

[Body] You earned 10 Ling-gems for completing your daily word goal 💰.

Learnings

I looked for inspiration in video games and gamification. I wanted the experience to feel like you had a cheery coach supporting you in every lesson while maintaining Lingual’s magical voice. Keeping in mind this was a language-learning app, I made sure the copy was useful, clear, and concise.
